The Grounds

The grounds surrounding the school building have experienced similarly dramatic changes. Many alumni recall the paved playlots that featured baseball games and even a toboggan run. Richard Won (Class of 1961) remembers that "there was a softball diamond with home base just inside the fence at the corner of Kimball and Bryn Mawr. I remember some kids were so good they would almost hit the school at the end of center field."

At some point, grass took over the northern edge of the grounds, and a garden was added on Catalpa in 2000. A playground occupies the corner of Catalpa and Kimball, and another one designed for pre-K students is on Christiana.

The field eventually experienced drainage problems, and a "No More Mud!" campaign took more than a decade to secure resources to improve the space. A new Community Field opened in 2019 and is often the site of recess and gym class during the day, and cricket and soccer games in the evenings and on weekends. The field is also the site of the North Park Community Market, a monthly gathering of local vendors, musicians, kids' activities, and local organizations.
